Thailand Orphanage Trip 2005
One of the events at village day was to climb a greased pole about 10-15 meters
high to
grab a bag with one month's salary in it.
It was greased well.
And yet someone finally managed to do it. He was the 10th or so to attempt it.
Another even was capture the flag water balloon fight. It was a popular game.
Both volunteers and locals joined in.
Our group made a few stupid looking pinatas. We didn't have time to paint a
face, so we painted an X.
The way they usually make pinatas is to fill a clay pot with flour, candy, small
dolls, and money.
The flour makes a big poof when it bursts which makes it more difficult to see
what came out.
The kids really want it to break so they all yell instructions as to where it is.
The girls in our group donated some make up and made up the locals. These young
kids have never seen make up
since they can barely afford essentials. They were quite happy to look mature.
Even the young ones got made up. Then the girls made up the boys and there was a
contest to see who was the cutest.
Then the boys had to choose who they though made them up. There were small
prizes for the winners.
The sack race is an international cheap and easy game.
Dada himself organizing the next event. His real name is Richard and he came
here
from the Philippines. He was an engineer and now he makes zero money, but is
much more happy.
Stomp the balloon was a game I suggested to start the day. It nearly didn't
happen because kids either popped
theirs right away or had them up too high so no one could pop it, like this guy
in the white shirt to the right.
A grid was made with several small bags. In each bag were some candies, dolls,
money, toys, chips, and so on.
The grid was suspended and then raised and lowered so the kids had to jump.
Finally they grabbed it and tore it apart.
